If you are aware of the Dropbox Spacerace, which is a exclusive race for students to let their friends and fellow students of the same college to sign up for Dropbox, which inturn adds points to the points collection for that college on the Spacerace leaderboard. The prize for collecting these points is a massive 25GB Cloud Storage account for all the students of that College for a period of two years.
The lure of a free 25GB Cloud Storage Account seems to have caught Indian Colleges like frenzy, and many Colleges have been vying to get upto that level.
The IIT aura
Arguably, even the best technical colleges of the country seems to have left no stone unturned in efforts to get that prize. Out of the top 10 colleges of India on the leaderboard, Six of them are IIT’s alone!
The IIT’s of Bombay, Kanpur, Madras and Guwahati are leading in the first four places and IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee follow them at 7th and 10th positions respectively. The other colleges that made into the top slots are BITS, DA-IICT, VIT and Indraprastha Institute, Delhi.
Compared to the world’s colleges, we are nowhere on the Map. NUS, Singapore leads the world’s pack at 41,000+ points whereas our own leader is IIT Bombay at 3,000 odd points.
My own alma mater of IIT Roorkee stands at 10th place in India with 896 points. Currently, Me and all my friend’s now have access to 15 GB of free space on Dropbox for a period of 2 years. Great, isn’t it?
Its a great initiative from Dropbox to involve the student community into a race for cloud storage. Despite many avenues, many people still do not know a thing about cloud and its applications or the possibilities of using a cloud.
